"Dear Dave"

Monday, April 8, 2002

Too much vulgarity...

You're acting like a fucking faggot now.  You aren't nearly as cool as the old Dave. Before you were just a fat guy with ultimate class and confidence.  Now you're just a fat guy who's cussing way too much -- thus losing the class that made you so popular before.  what, do you only work on this website drunk?  If that's the case, then sorry!  drink on!

The old Dave didn't get laid. The new and improved Dave is getting laid almost every day. Almost Monday, almost Tuesday, almost Wednesday... Go watch They Call Me Bruce now!

I'm actually only drunk about 50% of the time when I update this site. The other half of the time I'm either only slightly intoxicated or half-baked.

Favorite Final Fantasy...

I was thinking about my favorite game, FFVIII, when I thought, "I wonder what Dave Z's favorite FF game is?"

                                                          Longsack the Clown

Dear Longsack the Clown,

It's kind of hard for me to pin down my favorite Final Fantasy because they each had distinct strengths and weakness. Nevertheless, of the ones that I've played all the way through -- FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FIX -- I would have to say that IX is my favorite. Though, I did like VIII a lot more than most people did.

Topless Britney?

YOU TOOK DOWN THAT TOPLESS BRITNEY SPEARS PICTURE IN BABE OF THE WEEK!!!!  WHY?!?!?!??

Seriously, though, I went to your site last night and it was there, and I went back to it today and it's gone!  Why?

I don't know what you're talking about. It's still on the server...

BotW archive

Dear Dave,

Could you possibly make an archive for Babes of the Week? I just started going to your AWESOME website (I would've been going for a while, but I couldn't spell your name right) and I want to see the past Babe's of the Week.

THANX ALMIGHTY DUDE,

JP

Dear JP,

Just scroll down to the bottom of the current Babe of the Week page and you'll get the archives. It's pretty small right now, so it's easy to miss, but it'll surely grow as the weeks pass on by.

Chrono Cross...

YOU DONT OWN CHRONO CROSS?   How come?

is still in shock about this one

Greg

Dear Greg,

I do own Chrono Cross but it's mysteriously missing from my list...I'll have to go through each of my lists and update my stuff accordingly.

Musical tastes

Well Dave if your music tastes are as varied as mine then you deserve an award. Hell, after you post your CDs, maybe I will give you my list and make a comparison. I listen to a lot of different shit.

I just hope you don't listen to that MTV crap that's all.

And if I haven't heard of more then 50% of the bands you list, then you deserve another award

Prepare to be disappointed as my odd and varied tastes probably aren't in the way you're thinking. I have very "pop" tastes and have gone through musical phases that covered everything from rap to country. And, if you consider stuff like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera to be "that MTV crap", then you will definitely be disappointed.

As you probably know, my penis runs my life. Because of this, the music I like is often based on how hot the chick singing the song is. Hence, the infatuation with teen pop music and my year and a half period in my life where I was a country nut (blame Faith Hill and Shania Twain).

Funny Ad

Okay Dave, this has got to be the best ad I have ever come across in my life.

That ad is fucking hilarious. I order all who read this page to go give it a look right now. Do it!

Addicted to Dave

Dave,

I have an addiction. Not on crack. Not on Hot Shots Golf 3. Not sex. None of that stuff. The addiction I have is of you. I'm obsessed with you. Posters all over the wall of ur sexy ass. Ok, I'm sorry. None of that is true. But I have a question. How ever did you start the whole Sega Saturn web site in the first place? You started with that and just got bigger and bigger and now ur a celeb on my watch. (No really, my watch is custom made with a picture of you.) Then u worked at IGN. NOW UR MAKING GAMES!!!! How'd ya do it, Dave??? (This is a serious letter unlike the other ones I've been sending.)

Sincerely,

JP AKA Dumb Piece of ass

I was a big fan of the Saturn and was disappointed with the coverage it got from the mainstream publications. I felt VF was better than Toshinden despite its inferior graphics and felt that Daytona USA was better than Ridge Racer even though it visually inferior. I generally disagreed with most of the reviews I read and thought I could do it as good or better...

So, one day I decided to create a Saturn website on my AOL account and called it "Dave's Sega Saturn Page". I basically started it out by copying the design of the most popular Saturn site at the time, "Dustin's Sega Saturn Page", except that it was on a black background in the beginning and I included a bunch of my own reviews on it. The site grew as I did more stuff for it and the traffic grew accordingly. I eventually bought the sega-saturn.com domain and began making industry contacts (which in turn helped me gain further employment at places like Working Designs, IGN and Visual Concepts). It's that easy.

Money grows on trees

Dave--are you bankrupt? You seem to buy a lot of expensive things (like 5 mediocre DVDs (platoon sucks)). Unless of course VC pays you top dollar. Just wondering.

 ---A.J.

Dear A.J.

I'm not bankrupt, but am about $23.5K in debt. Luckily, I make a shit load of money on the side here being a Man Whore (good job if you can hack it in San Fran...). If you have a body like mine, people will throw money your way in a hurry.

Making videogame music

Hey Dave, how are ya man?

Recently, about the last 2 years or so, I've really gotten into composing music for games, but I'm a little skeptical as to how good of a career choice it would be. I haven't really tried to get anything heard yet, and I'm not really too sure how to go about doing it. So my question is, how likely is it that I could actually make a living off writing video game music?

Would it be nearly impossible to even make it into the industry simply off doing this? I was thinking about learning some programming at college next year to maybe help out my chances, but I don't know if it will help or not. I was also thinking of starting a website or something to let people download some songs, but it would probably generate little to no traffic, so would be pretty pointless. So can you give me any advice?

Any help is appreciated, thanks bud!

-BlackMetalRulesAll

Dear BlackMetalRulesAll,

You can definitely make it into the industry and make a living off of composing and writing videogame music. If you need proof, just look at Tommy Tallarico who has bought a plethora of kick ass cars (including a Lamborghini), purchases a small island, and is constantly scene with a horde of hot blondes twice his height thanks to the money he's made making videogame soundtracks.

Is it easy? No. But it can be done. I'm not really sure what you need to do, but I'd suggest sending out samples to as many companies as possible. Although, you may want to talk to a music lawyer about it before you do anything.

A few explanations

Hi Dave. Got a few questions. First, I'd like an explanation how a hard-corps gamer such as yourself and alleged Saturn/Sega fan could not own the games Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga. These titles were the best the Saturn ever saw and are absolutely on par with anything produced today. I'm disappointed that you don't own these games, especially since you run one of the better Saturn sites on the net. Secondly, why don't you own the Dreamcast game D2?  This is classic Sega goodness from Warp, boys who hate Sony and have always supported Sega. D2 was a great title and its hard to see how you could have passed it up for MKGold or Sydney 2000. Finally can you explain exactly what Christmas Nights is (a separate game or just a version with different graphics?) and do you own an X-box?

--Quentin.

A friend has my copy of BR and Panzer Dragoon Saga... I don't know if I'll ever get them back, though.

I didn't buy either MK Gold or Sydney 2000...and didn't have money to buy games at the time D2 came out. It was released during my days at WD where I was living off a $30/month food budget ($20 of which I spent on alcohol).

Christmas Nights is a special version of Nights with a Christmas theme. It actually has a ton of extra things in it and is in some ways a better overall game than the full version of the game. One of the coolest features of the game is that it works with the internal clock of the Saturn so that the game will change based on the time of the year you're playing it -- it has special backgrounds and environments for holidays like New Year's Day, April Fool's Day, Valentine's Day and obviously Christmas.

If you have a question, about games or life in general, just send it to "Dear Dave".
